Yummy Berry – Kid’s Tea

During the summer when my son was a small, he was forever asking for sodas or other sugar laden drinks. Also he wanted to emulate us by having a Cup of tea. Those of you who have inadvertently tried giving your children drinks that may contain caffeine  or large amounts of sugar know that these are hyperactive combinations. You also probably feel a little guilty thinking ‘my child should be drinking something that is healthier and not something that ‘wires’ them up’. Well we offered a Kid’s Tea’ from Natteas collection…

We theorized that the Herb and Fruit teas are full of natural fruits which are very tasty and refreshing: there are significant amounts of Vitamin C and other essential nutrients in these dried fruits and they are caffeine free…so all we had to do was find a blend that was appealing to children’s taste buds. This is where my son came in – he became human guinea pigs or perhaps a better term might be young tea taster’. Interestingly when offering this blend the reaction whether they were tasty or not was swift- probably one of the fastest tasting sessions we have ever carried out.

These teas can be enjoyed by children and adults alike – either hot or cold!. At home we would always keep a pitcher of Kid’s Tea in the refrigerator which our son consumed with great delight. A few tips: do not sugar these teas excessively; there are natural sugars in the fruits which sweeten the Herb brew when rehydrated. Make popsicles from the Kid’s Tea for your children to enjoy outside with their friends – let them pour their own drinks (outside of course!. they have to learn sometimes) – the low cost of kid’s tea (despite it’s wonderful taste) makes a learning curve relatively inexpensive. – In the evening after dinner they too can enjoy a warm beverage and you can enjoy a relatively peaceful moment as a family with Yummy Berry – Kid’s Tea!

Bring filtered or freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 2 slightly heaping teaspoons of loose tea for each 7-9oz / 200-260ml of fluid volume in the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 5-10 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea). Ideal Brewing Temperature: 100ºC/212ºF

(Pitcher): (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 12 slightly heaping teaspoons of herb & fruit blend into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 1¼ cups/315ml over the herb & fruit blend. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher, straining the tea. Add ice and top-up the pitcher

(Individual Serving): Place 2 slightly heaping teaspoons of herb & fruit blend into a teapot for each serving required. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 6-7oz/170-200ml per serving over the herb & fruit blend. Cover and let steep for 5-10 minutes. Add hot tea to a 12oz/375ml acrylic glass filled with ice, straining the tea or removing the bags. Not all of the tea will fit, allowing for approximately an additional ½ serving. Garnish and sweeten to taste. A rule of thumb when preparing freshly brewed herb & fruit tea is to increase the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted.

We strongly recommend using filtered or freshly drawn cold water brought to a rolling boil when brewing all types of tea. Today’s water has been known to carry viruses, parasites and bacteria. Boiling the water will kill these elements and reduce the potential incidence of water-borne illnesses.
