Badaling Yellow

Badaling Yellow Tea: A Story of Love and Legacy

Badaling Yellow tea, a delicate gem from Yunnan province, carries a name steeped in history and romance. This exquisite tea honours the iconic Badaling section of the Great Wall of China, built during the Ming dynasty. But how did a tea from Yunnan come to share such a notable name?

The tale begins in a quaint Yunnan mountain village, where a local tea farmer’s daughter captured the heart of a young guard stationed at Badaling. Their love blossomed against breathtaking scenery, yet duty loomed heavily over them. The guard, bound by a 15-year contract, felt torn between his responsibilities and his longing for the girl he adored.

As time passed, his yearning grew unbearable. One cool spring night, he decided to flee his duty. Tragically, soldiers captured him, and he met a grim fate at the hands of his commander, who discovered his escape plan. In a poignant gesture, the commander returned the guard’s body to Yunnan in a pine box, a heartbreaking reminder of love lost.

At that time, the girl was processing a harvest of Meng Ding Huang Ya, Yunnan’s prized yellow tea, when she received the box. Overcome with sorrow, her tears mingled with the freshly plucked leaves, infusing the harvest with her deep emotions. Moved by his daughter’s heartbreak, the tea farmer chose to honor the young guard’s memory. He declared that their cherished tea would now be known as Badaling Yellow, symbolizing enduring love and sacrifice.

The Craft of Badaling Yellow

Badaling Yellow tea is not just a name; it embodies a labour of love. Each leaf is hand-picked, sorted, and processed. This ensures that every cup captures the essence of its heartfelt origin. The tea offers a wonderfully light brew with a smooth flavor, perfect for any time of day. It’s ideal for moments when you seek a connection to history, love, and the artistry of tea-making.

With each sip of Badaling Yellow, you’re not merely tasting a beverage; you’re partaking in a story that transcends time and geography. This tea invites you to reflect on the beauty of love and the weight of sacrifice. Enjoy Badaling Yellow, and savour the legacy it carries with every cup.

Lover’s Leap

Lover’s Leap Tea

Nestled in one of Sri Lanka’s finest tea gardens, Lover’s Leap estate is renowned for its exquisite tea, especially during the peak season from February to March. During this time, the tea offers a delightful flavor profile that is both astringent and lively, reflecting the region’s unique climate.

Ideal Growing Conditions

The secret to Lover’s Leap’s exceptional quality lies in its remarkable weather. The estate enjoys cool nights, dry days, and bright sunshine. These conditions push the tea bushes to produce vibrant new leaves and enhance the overall flavor. As northeast monsoon winds travel from the Bay of Bengal, they create a rain shadow effect on the western slopes. This balance of moisture and dryness enriches the tea’s flavor, particularly at higher elevations where clouds often linger.

A Touch of History and Romance

Interestingly, the name Lover’s Leap comes from a nearby cliff. It serves as a poignant reminder of romantic tragedies where jilted lovers would leap. Close by, you’ll find the charming Hill Club, steeped in history. Here, deep leather lounge chairs tell tales of decades of guests, and windows with shutters dance in the breeze. Visitors are warmly welcomed as “The Master” or “The Madam,” adding a nostalgic touch.

True Orange Pekoe Quality

Lover’s Leap produces a true Orange Pekoe grade tea, which indicates whole leaf quality. When you pour boiling water over these leaves, you’ll witness the captivating “agony of the leaf” as they unfurl and expand. This visual spectacle is just the beginning; the brewed tea offers a vibrant aroma and a refreshing taste.

In summary, Lover’s Leap tea is more than just a beverage; it’s a journey through Sri Lanka’s rich landscapes and traditions. Each cup invites you to savour the harmony of nature and history. Enjoy the lively flavours and unique story of Lover’s Leap—where every sip is a leap into paradise!

Soom 1st Flush

Soom 1st Flush Tea

Soom 1st Flush tea is harvested in Darjeeling from March to mid-April. During this time, the tea bushes begin “flushing” after their winter dormancy. This vigorous growth occurs as daytime temperatures rise by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, reaching around 20 degrees. The increased hours of daylight, combined with excellent moisture retention in the soil from winter rains, create the perfect conditions for this stunning tea.

Unique Growing Conditions

The Soom estate features severe terrain, with slopes approaching 45 degrees. These steep inclines mean that the estate still transports green leaves to the factory using mountain ponies. Many of the tea bushes are over 130 years old, yet they continue to produce remarkable tea. In fact, some 1st Flush teas are rushed to Germany in a race reminiscent of the Beaujolais Run.

Origin of the Name

There are several theories about the origin of the estate’s name. In Lepcha, the local dialect, “Soom” means “Three” or “Triangular,” which is fitting since the estate is bounded by three streams and has a somewhat triangular shape. Another theory suggests that “Soom” means “holy abode,” referencing the local deity worshiped in the area.

Community Impact

The factory, which burned down in 1995 and was out of production for 1.5 years, now boasts modern equipment. Soom estate plays an important social role, employing 700 people and providing housing, food, and medical care for their families. This support system means about 2,000 people live on the estate, all with stunning views of the Himalayan Mountains.

Experience the delicious Soom 1st Flush tea, an excellent example of a high-quality Darjeeling. Each sip offers a taste of the unique terroir and rich history behind this remarkable estate. Enjoy the vibrant flavours and the story of Soom!

Margaret’s Hope Darjeeling

Margaret’s Hope Darjeeling

A Touching History

Margaret’s Hope tea garden has a poignant story dating back to the 1930s. It was owned by Mr. Bagdon, who lived in London but regularly visited his estate. His younger daughter, Margaret, fell in love with the garden, dreaming of returning one day. Tragically, she fell ill during her return voyage to England and passed away shortly after. In her memory, her father renamed the garden Margaret’s Hope. Legend has it that her spirit visits the estate bungalow, moving through the main guestroom and out to the tennis courts.

Unique Characteristics

The tea bushes at Margaret’s Hope are predominantly of the Chinese Jat variety, which contributes to the green, tippy appearance of the leaves and their superb fragrance. Due to the high altitude and cooler climate, the bushes grow slowly, resulting in limited production but exceptional quality.

Flavour Profiles

The best time to enjoy Margaret’s Hope tea is during the “second flush,” which runs from late May to the end of June. During this period, Darjeeling teas are incomparable. Some describe the flavor as nutty, while others liken it to black currants. Most commonly, it evokes the taste and fragrance of muscat grapes.

Harvest Seasons

There are three main harvest seasons for high-quality Darjeeling:

  • 1st Flush: Harvested from late February to mid-April, these teas are light and intense, with a muscatel note, making them a gentle afternoon option.
  • 2nd Flush: Harvested in June, these teas are fully developed. The liquor is bright, and the taste is full and round, featuring excellent muscatel notes. This superb afternoon tea pairs wonderfully with scones and raspberry conserve.
  • Autumnal: These teas, when available, offer a round taste and coppery liquor, making them excellent as a breakfast tea.

Experience the delicate yet pleasantly astringent cup of Margaret’s Hope Darjeeling. Each sip invites you to savor its rich history and unique flavour profile, making it a delightful addition to your tea collection. Enjoy the essence of this extraordinary garden!
